It's been a long time Greece has financial problems, it is no news. Actually, Greece has financial problems even from the generation of this country after the revolution of 1821.
Greeks (ancient Greeks actually) invented democracy, surely all modern Greeks are proud of that. Yet after the fall of Constantinople to the crusaders in 1204 the greeks are no more as we know them. Crusaders, a christian army, ransacked their fellow christians and destroyed and stole from the byzantines/greeks their stolen goods decorate Venice now, and they present their stealing proudly still today. Also they stole money and treasures never to give back. Yes that is old old times, I totally agree and we should move forward, yet even this stealing is affecting the greek people even today, and not only that, other steals that we endured from the "civilized" westerners, the "rich" west against "poor" east...
This betrayal caused the byzantine empire to become even weaker and eventually fall under the Turks. A destruction that will cause the greek people to become enslaved for 400 years. Some "historians" under the guidance of the new european culture try to alter history and say that this turkish occupation did not destroy the greek culture and progress but was even good for us! Just a walk in Paris, or any other major european city and a walk in Athens will make you understand this is a lie. Greeks froze in time fro the whole turkish occupation, no progress, no wealth was generated, and if was any wealth generated this went to the turkish treasury naturally. As a powerful ally all european nations were supporting the turks and wanted the greeks enslaved, these are our allies and friends, please note that, they all place their own good living and the well to do of their citizens above every humane right! They did not only commit a huge crime in 1204 but they continually supported the enslavement of a nation.
Greeks as every nation after 400 years of occupation under the turks did not make any cultural or economic progress and after our revolution we found ourselves 400 years back from the rest of europe. Some might argue that western states helped us with the greek revolution, any help ever given to the greek was always given to support western states their interests in the area or to appease their societies. In that time of the greek revolution the interests in the area started to change and the societies created a humanistic trend supporting the greek people after knowing the atrocities of the turks, therefore in support of their interests the great empires of the time decided to give us limited support and our independence counterweighting it with heavy loans that we tried to repay only in the 20th century the first of them! Yes we repayed the first revolutionary loan in the decade of 1980! Now to who we had these loans, which banks and banker greek people still do not know (Rothchilds most of them), and who are the stock holder of the Bank of Greece since it is NOT only the greek state, unlike any other countries state bank.
Greece as a modern state was not to become ever financially free. No way! This was not the case, the great empires did not gave us our freedom to become free but financially enslaved to them. Another example of this case is the 1879 war with the Turks, King Constantine led a badly organized and poorly equipped army against the turks to expand Greece (seeking lebensraum as our friends the germans used to call it some time) and the turks not only defeated us Greeks but started marching towards Athens with no army to stop them. The empires intervened and saved greek state, the turks stopped and greece was "saved". Well, not saved exactly as the empires explained the need for a large and well equipped army, with equipment we should buy from them, new loans and large arms purchases, greeks even deeper in loans...
With greek politics their allies, foreign powers enslaved modern greeks even almost before become greeks as a newly established state.
Their major ally Venizelos destroyed greek economy, putting greeks in a spiral of wars and expeditions to expand greek state and fight off the turks, in fact serving foreign policy to the letter and taking orders from the foreign empires. It is no accident that neither of his fails, his betrayal his coups never mentioned in greek school history books but as he represents the greek political establishment they want to present him as a "father of the nation". EVERY time Venizelos was losing an election he either sabotaged the next government OR he made a coup. Never told! He destroyed greek economy financing the first world war expeditions in greek area after making a second illegal government in Thessaloniki and making secret treaties that still are not presented concerning Crete and it's union in condition with the rest of the greek state.
Thousands of greek soldiers and officers died to support british oil interest in the middle east. To create a good diversion in order british defeat the turks with the help of the spy Laurence of Arabia and acquire the oil rich areas (do not forget that then the technology was changing from coal to oil).

Our other friends the germans used us during second world war, ripping off our little savings and giving us also a receipt that we still have in our national archives. No prime minister and especially the other "father of the nation" Karamanlis never asked to get them back. Let us not forget that there were serious accusations that Karamanlis during the war was a Nazi supporter and got money from Jews for the works with Nazis as a gift. After the war Karamanlis who was appointed initially with royal decree and not elections, went to the German Chancellor Adenauer and instead of asking the stolen money he asked for a loan! There the Americans who had put western germany as the first line of defense against communism surely played their role. Moreover no one speaks for other secret treaties that we have waived our rights from this money the Nazi germany stole from us. Who signed it? Obvious: Karamanlis! But if this is aired one of the political pillars of modern Greece will fall, it is not to be known as if Karamanlis proves to be a traitor, then also other politicians will be under question, so no politicians form any side wants to unravel such a discussion that will put greek people to think about their leaders...
Under the european union the rest of the western european states needed some extra money as the economic environment for their countries was not good. Who else to spare than Greece? They could either start a small war with turkey in order to sell us more guns and ammunition but indeed that would be a lot of trouble with questionable results, moreover it would create wounds not easy to close, turkey would never be accepted in EU ever, and they should resolve new territory claims from both sides, to much trouble! They so, invented the financial war. With some rogue politicians that under orders gambled the money collected by pension funds to their banks's risky (and already defaulted products) they gathered hard cash, and they indebted our institutions that in order to save them we had to borrow money again from the people they stole from us.
In the EU there are members sovereign states, as greece has to ask the troika for each offer legislation we are not a sovereign state any more, it is like we have a Hounda, an illegal forced government, a government that takes instructions from abroad from non political organizations, against the will of our people. Moreover, no one informed greece when entering the european union that some time they will take our sovereignty. If it was going to do so they should then have a referendum and ask the people if 20 years after they wanted to be enslaved and their children to become unemployed in order the germans to have good vacations.
Now that I mentioned germans, please help me if there is any other example in world economics in the course of history a state to loose two world wars and be one of the super powers a while ago. A nation to have serious debts and never repaid them and now is a super power because of course never paid these debts and used slave labour in their factories that exist even today.
Greece is not as think it is, it will never be as we know it, or dreamed it and despite what you think I believe that greece should not pay anything to anyone any more, and not make any other election but to use a system of direct democracy. Then all our foreign "friends" will see what the greek people is thinking, that we will not be the "fools" of europe any more and will not steal any more money from us in order to sustain the german peoples deposits and savings nor for the french people to be able to buy cars and have 15 days of vacations spending thousands of euros in greece.
